Bernard Cache: Bernard Cache is a key figure within a select group who have been researching and using digital tools and computation techniques for architectural conception and production that has recently been termed ‘non-standard architecture’. However, Cache has played an important alternative role within this group, not simply celebrating the possibilities of shape and form, but rather delving deeply into history, philosophy and mathematics to uncover the relationship between today’s technologies and the traditions of the past. He applies research into characters such as Plato, Euclid and recently Vitruvius (among others) to inform today’s production of architecture. In this lecture, Cache speaks on the topic of Vitruvius and his 10 books on architecture, exploring the distinction between “architect” and “machinator” that was common in Roman times. Citing Vitruvius’ main competence in the building of machines rather than in the orders of architecture, he forms an argument based on the two sides of mechanical thinking, as defined by ‘machination’: the making of machines, and the

making of tricks; essentially a faculty of cunning.
